Upper Mustang Trek Overview

Upper Mustang Trek around Nepal Far North-Western Himalaya, which is an extension of vast Tibetan South West plateau considered as the world most significant and highest. Upper Mustang Trek before three decades was closed to outside visitors and flung, its door open to observe its scenic and photogenic country enriched with age-old culture and heritage of Buddhism and the ancient practice of Bon sect.

Bon sect a Pre-Buddhism worshiping nature and mountains as well as rivers and, the departed soul of a family member, which makes this trip on Upper Mustang Adventure enjoyable to visit and experience the wild country. Upper Mustang adventure starts with a swift flight from the scenic and beautiful Pokhara city a famous touristic spot with the natural beauty of mountains and lakes.

On reaching Jomsom the headquarter town of Mustang district and the hub of Thakali people, the tribe of Kaligandaki River valley been on trade with Tibet that extends beyond Upper Mustang on old Trans Himalaya Salt Trade Route. A journey of great liveliness as the walk starts from Jomsom to reach into Upper Mustang territory within towering eroded cliffs and canyon of dramatic colors that change along with sunlight.

The walk leads on a wide-open country exploring impressive villages adorned with Buddhism religion monuments crossing few high passes with dramatic views of landscapes and snow-capped mountains. Slowly trail enters into the former walled kingdom of Lo-Manthang within its impressive village/ town of narrow paved alley and old fort (dzong) building visiting its interesting places with ancient monasteries and palace of late king / Raja of Mustang.

After a marvelous time head back to Jomsom taking high route to remote areas of Upper Mustang around Yara with old interesting Luri Gompa (monastery) to reach at Muktinath a holy spot of Hindu and Buddhist religions. Finally, our great journey completes reaching at Jomsom for the scenic flight back to beautiful Pokhara after a fantastic experience and time on Upper Mustang Adventure.

Main Best Seasons for Upper Mustang Adventure

From April to mid-November months includes the rainy wet monsoon season as Upper Mustang falls within Rain Shadow Area, where heavy rain clouds blocked by high Himalayan Mountain range, like the climate of Tibet dry and arid but beautiful to visit.

April to May and September to mid-November best times, when the country is dry with clear blue sky and for dramatic views of snow-capped peaks and landscapes, where’s October and, mid-November will be the coldest time especially morning and night time as well in the shade.

Day 01: Arrival day in Kathmandu via various airlines and transfer to hotel.

Day 02: In Kathmandu options for sightseeing tour and trek preparation.

Day 03: Drive or Fly to Pokhara 860 m (30 mins by air) with 6 hrs overland.
  • Morning overland journey to Pokhara of near 6 hrs drive
  • At Pokhara transfer to your hotel by the lake side of Phewa
  • Time for short walk with view of peaks and lake and preparation for the trek next morning
  • Dinner either in respective hotels or outside restaurants near the lake side (Flight options 30 minutes to reach Pokhara by air from Kathmandu)

Day 04: Morning flight to Jomsom 2,715 m and walk to Kagbeni 2,830 m - 04 hrs.
  • After overnight at Pokhara a city blessed with Annapurna Himalaya
  • Morning transfer to Pokhara airport for short flight to Jomsom, headquarter town of Mustang district.
  • From Jomsom, walk on Kaligandaki River t Kagbeni, a village and entrancepoint to Upper Mustang area.
  • Afternoon free to explore Tibetan style village of similar culture and traditional life of Buddhism as well practice ancient Bon religion of pre Buddhism sects.

Day 05: Drive to Chusang 2,820 m start walk to Samar 3,290 m - 05 hrs.
  • Jeep drive on wide dirt road, morning leads past Kagbeni into Upper Mustang
  • Journey continues around beautiful, scenic country with views of snow-capped peaks, Reach Chusang, a village with few surviving trees of Poplars and Willow species, within its red colored earth surrounding.
  • Walk towards Chele village spelled as Tshele, crossing stream in between broken canyons and ruined castle of rock and red mud walls.
  • The trail gets steeper to the top hill views of Gyagar across huge canyon and scenic territory.
  • Continue climb to a pass at 3,540 m then descent to Samar for overnight stop in local nice homely lodge.

Day 06: Trek to Ghiling 3,570 m - 06 hrs.
  • Morning short climb to a ridge then descend to a gorge past monuments called ‘Chorten’ painted with official religious color of red, black, yellow and white paints, colors
  • Cross a stream with climb at 3,800 m high, thenn downhill to a small place at Shyangbochen, a place with few tea shops.
  • Walk and climb to cross above 3,770 m pass to a wide valley with downhill to Ghiling for overnight stop,
  • A nice village with large agriculture fields of barley which is on the outskirt of Ghiling village.

Day 07: Trek to Ghami 3,520 m - 05 hrs.
  • From Ghiling climb on gradual path to the centre of a valley
  • Route leads below Tama Gung with long climb towards a valley and crossing Nyi La pass at above 3,950 m high.
  • Highest spot of the adventure, the south boundary of Lo areas within Upper Mustang,
  • From here route takes to Ghami village for overnight stop one of major village within Lo area.

Day 08: Trek to Lo-Manthang 3,810 m - 06 hrs.
  • From Ghami village, walk start to former Walled Kingdom of Lo-Manthang,
  • A short descend to Charang-Chu River, climb on top of a hill after Tholung valley,
  • From here route diverts north a boundary of Ghami and Charang- Tsarang within Lo areas.
  • Cross stream reach a wide barren country with climb to a hill top at above 3,850 m,
  • Then enter southern wall which is the main entrance of Lo Manthang.
  • Once inside the fort village or town takes you back at medvial times a great place for overnight stop.

Day 09: At Lo-Manthang for local excursion and explore the village-town.
  • A free day explore around Lo-Manthang visit interesting sites,
  • Place with more than 150 houses includes many residential quarters of monks and lamas,
  • Houses closely packed where palace and monasteries are at the bottom section of this vertical and L shaped houses.
  • The Mustang raja’s palace a four storey building in the centre of the town-village,
  • Home of late Raja, Jigme Parbal Bista, and Rani (queen), who was from the noble family of Lhasa-Tibet.

Day 10: Trek to Yara 3,650 m - 06 hrs.
  • Morning route leads on the same path for few hours, and then taking an
    alternative route into isolated areas of Upper Mustang.
  • Route divert to east with steep descend to small village of Dhi situated on the bank of the Phuyung Khola.
  • Walk and cross a bridge over Phuyung Khola / stream, climbs starts on steep path to reach a small village at Yara decorated with colorful Buddhist player flags,
  • With time to explore impressive eroded landscape within nice Yara village.

Day 11: At Yara explore around Luri Gompa.
  • A rest day explore Yara village and visit Luri Gompa and caves of full of Gompas (monastery and shrines).

Day 12: Trek to Tangbe 3,240 m - 06 hrs.
  • After Luri Gompa with historical and impressive monastery,
  • Morning walk on high trail within red eroded hills to a small ridge top
  • Downhill to Tangbe village at 3,370 m high for overnight stop a moderate size village of about 30 houses, the houses are closely attached.

Day 13: Trek to Tetang 3,040 m - 06 hrs.
  • Walk with views of distant snow capped peaks and the heading downhill and up at Tetang a small village for overnight stop around Yak pasture field.

Day 14: Trek to Muktinath 3,760 m - 06 hrs.
  • From Tetang, walk to Muktinath a holy spot for both Hindu and Buddhist followers.
  • Gentle walk to Muktinath located around Lower Mustang direction leads east on gradual winding trail past temporary Yak herder huts and shelter
  • On walk views of Nilgiri’s and Dhaulagiri mountain range reach at Muktinath for overnight stop, afternoon visit Muktinath temple and its holy premises.

Day 15: Drive to Jomsom 2, 715 m with free afternoon- 02 hrs.
  • Due to road condition end our trek with jeep drive to Jomsom around Kali-Gandaki River Valley.
  • Reach Jomsom for last overnight stop, famous for delicious apples and its product.

Day 16: Fly to Pokhara 860 m - 20 mins and transfer to hotel.
  • Morning a walk to Jomsom air-terminal for scenic, short flight to Pokhara,
  • During flight views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna range on both sides of the plane windows
  • Landing at Pokhara airport short drive to Phewa lake side for overnight stops in a nice hotels

Day 17: Drive / Fly back to Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.
  • Morning drive on busy interesting highway to Kathmandu
  • On route lunch after 2-3 hrs journey then reach back at Kathmandu.
  • Time for leisure activities and shopping around Kathmandu
