Makalu Base Camp Trekking Overview

Makalu Base Camp Trekking is an incredible adventure around Nepal Far Eastern of massive Khumbukarna Himalaya range that leads you right in the heart of world’s fifth-highest Mt. Makalu at base camp above 4,812 m high. Makalu Base Camp Trekking leads you to a great experience in the complete wilderness of mountains within the northern zone of remorseless fields of ice and glaciers after walking past low, warm country of Arun valley.

The adventure begins with a scenic, and exciting flight from Kathmandu with an impressive panorama of mountains includes Everest and Makalu with Kanchenjunga towards Far East horizon. From Tumlingtar, a charming farm village and town located on the shelf of Arun River, where is an adventurous drive on four-wheels takes you at Num a hill village where our walk starts heading further north-bound.

Walk with down and ups past many spread-out farm villages to reach the last town of Tashi-Gaon inhabited by Sherpa of Makalu region enriched with Buddhism religion and colorful culture. Makalu base camp trekking continues leaving the human settlement and villages entering into high hills and scenic ridge as walk leads into the dense alpine forest of tall rhododendron-junipers-oaks-magnolia-pines and fir tree lines to the top at Kongma Danda (for the high peak in Nepalese).

Kongma Danda offers excellent views of Makalu-Baruntse and Kanchenjunga peaks as walk leads past frozen lakes to reach scenic Barun Valley enclosed by high rocky cliff and snow-capped mountains. Barun valley a beautiful area, where rare herbs and vegetation that nearly lost on this planet found in this wild surrounding this exotic valley, from here finally our adventure leads to the end of the valley at Makalu base camp.

Best Seasons for Makalu Base Camp Trekking

March to May springtime will be the best time when wild-flowers especially the rhododendron (Nepal national flower) in full bloom, which the walk more appealing with beautiful, bright morning till afternoon, with some chances of rains sometimes.

September, October to mid-November another best months around Autumn/Fall and beginning of wintertime, when most of the days are outstanding views of the landscape and walks but can be much colder and freezing as altitude gains with chances of snow sometimes.

Monsoon months from mid-June to mid-September wet rainy seasons were less number of trekkers venture, but much greener hills with lush vegetation in wet seasons, so the choice as per your holidays for Nepal and Makalu Base Camp Trekking.

Day 01: Arrival day in Kathmandu via various airlines and transfer to hotel.
  • At Kathmandu airport received by Adventure Alpine Gorkha Treks staff / guide
  • Transfer to your hotel in the hub of Kathmandu around Thamel area
  • Meet at the hotel lobby for group regarding trek briefing

Day 02: In Kathmandu options for sightseeing tour and trek preparation.
  • Free day in Kathmandu for leisure activities
  • Full day sightseeing tour around the city places of Interest within world heritage sites around Kathmandu.
  • Rest of the day preparation for Makalu Base Camp trekking

Day 03: Fly to Tumlingtar 480 m and drive to Num village 1,480 m with 45 mins air flight and 4 hrs drives for overnight stop.
  • Morning transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport for short scenic flight to Tumlingtar
  • During air views of massive Himalaya range with Everest and Makalu and other high peaks
  • On arrival at Tumlingtar transfer in local four wheel drive where drive leads to Num a hill town with many farm villages
  • Views of Jaljala Mountains with Makalu towards north direction

Day 04: Trek to Seduwa 1,493 m - 05 hrs.
  • From Num morning steep descend to Arun River and climb towards rural village of Ramara for lunch and refreshing stops.
  • After a break with uphill for few hours to reach at Seduwa a farm village of mixed tribes with Hindu Chettries-Brahmins-Magar and Gurung with some Sherpa.
  • Overnight either in simple local lodge or camp around the school yard with enough time the explore village life.

Day 05: Trek to Tashi-Gaon 2,100 m - 04 hrs.
  • Walk follows along nice gradual path through many farm terraces and isolated  hamlets to reach at Tashi-Gaon with short climb to our overnight stop.
  • Tashi-Gaon a Sherpa village steeped with Buddhist religion and culture which is also the last human permanent settlement on route Makalu base camp.
  • At Tashi-Gaon for lunch and overnight stay either in local simple lodge or camping in tents.

Day 06: Trek to Kohma Danda 3,500 m /11,482 ft- 06 hrs.
  • Morning on leaving the main village heading into deep forest of rhododendron, Pines, fir and oak trees
  • Walk leads to climb past cattle herders pasture fields and with steep for few hours to reach on top Kohma Danda.
  • A high ridge with few smaller trees of rhododendron and pines with camping for overnight stops.
  • Kohma Danda offers views of Makalu-Chamlang-Baruntse with Kanchenjunga peaks.

Day 07: Trek to Mumbuk 3,400 m - 06 hrs.
  • Walk leads north along a ridge line past Sano and Thulo Pokhari (ponds) and crossing small passes Keke-la and Shipton-la of 4,230 m high.
  • As route leads towards green areas within back to forest and downhill to Mumbuk for overnight camp in the midst of alpine tree lines.

Day 08: Trek to Nehe Kharka 3,750 m - 06 hrs.
  • Morning views of Khumbukarna Himalaya range that borders Nepal and Tibet- China.
  • Walk downhill to enter scenic Barun valley a beautiful spot enclosed by high rocky cliffs and hills with snow capped peaks.
  • Barun valley enriched with herbs and almost extinct vegetations, where Makalu area villages a Yak grazing area during spring and summer season.
  • Journey leads on near level ground with gradual climb along Barun River to reach at Nehe Kharka for overnight camp or in simple and basic lodge.

Day 09: Trek to Sherson 4,410 m - 05 hrs.
  • Walk continues up towards North-West to reach at Sherson, the last place with few vegetations of alpine shrubs and juniper bush.
  • Heading up in gentle trail crossing streams few times to reach a large field at Sherson for overnight camp or in simple local lodge
  • Sherson close on route Makalu base camp with superb views of Mt. Makalu and Baruntse peaks.

Day 10: Trek to Makalu Base Camp 4,870 m/ 15,978 ft - 04 hrs.
  • Morning leads to our main highlight in the heart of Mt. Makalu at base camp Close to Barun icy pond.
  • Walk leaves few vegetation of prickly Burberry and juniper bush for arid and barren terrain of moraine and ice.
  • After 3-4 hours of good steady walks with time for short break reach at Makalu Base Camp the highest overnight stop of the adventure
  • At Makalu base camp for lunch and overnight stay either in simple and basic lodge or with camping facilities.

Day 11: At Makalu Base Camp to explore around.
  • Rest day at Makalu base camp morning enjoy towering mountain views of Makalu with other adjoining peaks
  • Include view of Makalu range with Baruntse Mountain as hike leads to view- point facing one of the rare East Face of Mt. Everest known as Khansung side toward North-West.

Day 12: Trek to Yangre Kharka 3,645 m - 07 hrs.
  • From Makalu base camp long walk on gradual descent brings you back in the
    midst of Barun valley at Yangre Kharka for overnight camp or in lodge.
  • A long day walks of more than 6 hours facing grand views along.

Day 13: Trek to Mumbuk 3,400 m - 06 hrs.
  • After a wonderful time at Barun valley and Makalu base camp a gradual walk for few hour.
  • On leaving Barun valley climb higher up into forested area to reach at Mumbuk for overnight stop.

Day 14: Trek to Kohma Danda 3,500 m - 06 hrs.
  • Morning few hours climb to reach a ridge towards Kohma walk over Keke-la and Shipton-la past Thulo and Sano Pokhari (ponds) to reach at Kohma Danda
  • Kohma Danda for overnight stop with grand views of Makalu and Kanchenjunga Range.

Day 15: Trek to Tashi-Gaon 2,100 m - 05 hrs.
  • A long downhill within forested area to reach back into human settlement at Tasi-
    Gaon village for overnight stop

Day 16: Trek to Seduwa - 04 hrs.
  • Leaving Tashi-Gaon in the morning change of route to reach Seduwa where walk leads high above the main trail towards Norbu-Gaon
  • Norbu-Gaon a large Sherpa farm village and then short downhill to Seduwa for overnight stop.

Day 17: Trek to Num - 05 hrs.
  • From Seduwa walk leads to long descend back to Arun River
  • Cross over a bridge and climb up to Num for last overnight stop around the high Hills of Makalu area

Day 18: Drive back to Tumlingtar - 04 hrs.
  • Walk ends at Num where morning drive leads up to Chinchele village and downhill to Mane-Bhanjyang village.
  • From here short good drive past large Kand-Bari, a large town and headquarter of Sanka-Sava district of Makalu area.
  • Drive continues downhill reaching at warm low farm areas at Tumlingtar and transfer into a nice local lodge.
  • Time here to spend observing local Eastern people of Nepal with fascinating traditions and culture of both Hindu and Buddhism religions

Day 19: Fly back to Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.
  • Morning after breakfast transfer to Tumlingtar air terminal as per the flight time, where scenic swift flight takes you to Kathmandu
  • Reaching Kathmandu transfer to hotel with evening free at leisure for individual activities

Day 20: International Departure homeward bound or respective countries.
