Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek Overview

Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek an adventure into remote corners of Nepal Far West Himalayan range that extends towards further west to Dolpo and North at Mustang and close to Annapurna Himalaya around Kaligandaki River Valley. Around Dhaulagiri a scenic circuit of less than two-week duration visiting world 7th highest Mt. Dhaulagiri Base Camp and crossing high spectacular French Pass over 5,357 m with another Thapa / Dhampus Pass to reach the end of the walks at Mustang district.

Mt. Dhaulagiri stands at 8,167 m high one of the massive range of mountains. Our walk leads around both scenic and best sides of the hill starting from east face to reach north within wildest country covered within remorseless fields of ice and glaciers. Adventure ‘Dhaulagiri circuit Trek’ begins from warm areas of Mygdi district after an exciting drive from beautiful Pokhara, where walk leads through rural farm villages of Magar people the hill tribe of Western Nepal.

The walk leads to higher cooler hills and beyond farm villages, entering a dense forest of tall pines, firs, oaks, and rhododendron trees, After crossing a few fast streams and then reaching at the barren country of ice and moraine on leaving the green vegetation and tree lines at Dhaulagiri base camp.

An excellent spot beneath towering peaks of Dhaulagiri, and its vast ice-falls next to our camp at base camp, Then heading over high French Pass with an outstanding panorama of Dhaulagiri range of peaks to reach scenic Hidden Valley enclosed by giant mountains. A wide hidden valley by the massive scale of heights, which is also a summer pasture for yaks of Mustang villagers, where walk traverse Dhampus and Thapa pass with views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain range then back into green vegetation and tree lines at Marpha.

Marpha a charming village to complete our adventurous walk within Mustang around Kaligandaki River valley where a short drive takes you to Jomsom town for short scenic flight to Pokhara, to conclude our remarkable and memorable adventure and experience Around Dhaulagiri Trekking.

Best Seasons for Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek

March to May springtime will be the best time when wild-flowers especially the rhododendron (Nepal national flower) in full bloom, which the walk more appealing with beautiful, bright morning till afternoon, with some chances of rains sometimes.

September, October to mid-November another best months around Autumn/Fall and beginning of wintertime, when most of the days are unobstructed views and walks but can be much colder and freezing as altitude gains with chances of snow sometimes.

Monsoon months from mid-June to mid-September wet rainy seasons were less number of trekkers venture, but much greener hills with lush vegetation in wet seasons, so the choice as per your holidays for Nepal and for Around Dhaulagiri Trekking.

Day 01: Arrival day in Kathmandu via various airlines and transfer to hotel.
  • At Kathmandu airport received by Adventure Alpine Gorkha Treks staff / guide
  • Transfer to your hotel in the hub of Kathmandu around Thamel area
  • Meet at the hotel lobby for group regarding trek briefing
  • Evening includes welcome dinner in authentic Nepalese restaurants with culture programs of the country.

Day 02: In Kathmandu options for sightseeing tour and trek preparation.
  • Free day in Kathmandu for leisure activities
  • Options for sightseeing tour around the city places of Interest
  • Rest of the day preparation for the trek to Poon Hill Annapurna Panorama

Day 03: Drive or Fly to Pokhara 860 m (30 mins by air) with 6 hrs overland.
  • Morning overland journey to Pokhara of near 6 hrs drive
  • At Pokhara transfer to your hotel by the lake side of Phewa
  • Time for short walk with view of peaks and lake and preparation for the trek next morning
  • Dinner either in respective hotels or outside restaurants near the lake side (Flight options 30 minutes to reach Pokhara by air from Kathmandu)

Day 04: Drive to Darbang village 1,230 m via Beni town 900 - 05 hrs.
  • From Pokhara with views of Annapurna drive leads to Beni, headquarter town of Mygdi district within Dhaulagiri region.
  • Journey continues to reach a farm village at Darbang for overnight stop either in tented camps or in local simple lodge around low warm areas.
  • Which is on route of Dhaulagiri and towards Dolpo area this village populated by Magar people the tribe of mid hills of Western Nepal.

Day 05: Trek to Riverside 1,700 m - 04 hrs.
  • First day walk follow Mygdi River upstream past farm villages and into
    forest to reaching our camp site for overnight stop by the River side

Day 06: Trek to Bagar 2,375m - 06 hrs.
  • From here walk upstream to reach an isolated farm village at Juge pani,
    for refreshing lunch stop
  • Afternoon with steep climb to reach a ridge top, then downhill into cool shade of forest to Bagar for overnight stop,
  • The last village on route Dhaulagiri base camp and Hidden Valley.

Day 07: Trek to Dovan 2,600m - 06 hours.
  • Morning walk with climb within forest of bamboo, oaks and rhododendron trees,
  • Then down-hill to reach Dovan for overnight camp, located in the midst of lovely forest a small temporary settlement with small teahouse and shops.

Day 08: Trek to Chartare / Bhainsi Kharka 3,110 m -05 hrs.
  • From Dovan cross a small bridge and into forest path to overnight stop at Chartare also called Bhainse Kharka.
  • Situated in the middle of forest s a grazing area for local cattle herders of Mygdi villagers

Day 09: Trek to Pakhaban (Japanese Camp) 3,745m -05 hrs.
  • Morning walk leads past green vegetation and tree lines to reach south west of massive Dhaulagiri.
  • Within fields of ice and glaciers, this spot also refereed as Italian Camp.
  • From here views of Putha Huinchuli, Manapathi and Dhaulagiri south flank,
  • After walking within glacier, moraine climb over rocky ridge to reach at Pakhaban also called Japanese camp.
  • This camp offers views of Dhaulagiri South West Face with Manapathi, Puttha Hiunchuli includes huge ice wall of Tsaurabong Peak.

Day 10: Trek to Dhaulagiri Base Camp 4,750m - 06 hrs.
  • Today walk follows over moraine, glaciers and boulders of iceberg at some sections with faint trail,
  • Where route follows over glaciated area, a tough walk over glacier to reach a rocky open area at Dhaulagiri base camp for overnight stop
  • Overnight camp at Dhaulagiri base camp facing close views of Mt. Dhaulagiri-I at above 8,167 m,
  • Includes views of icefalls, glacier with Tukuche peak and West peaks of Dhaulagiri II (7,751 m.), Dhaulagiri III (7,715 m.) and Dhaulagiri IV (7,618 m.).

Day 11: Trek to Hidden Valley 4,890 m via French Pass 5,357 m.
  • From wild and scenic camp walk to the highest spot of the adventure to cross French pass at 5,357 meters.
  • At the top short descend to reach a grassy field at Hidden Valley for overnight camp, offers views of Sita Chuchura, Mukut Himal, and Tashi Kang 5,386 meters, Tukche Peak and Dhaulagiri-I.

Day 12: At Hidden Valley (contingency or spare day).
  • A spare and contingency day in case of bad weather condition on walks,
  • If all goes well we can carry on to next camp to more safe and nice area to make the next day shorter towards Pokhara.
  • On this day relax and enjoy the views and explore around least trekked area of Hidden valley.

Day 13: Trek to Yak Kharka 4,890 m - 06 hrs.
  • After Hidden Valley, walk on gradual path for few hours to reach last high pass of Thapa or Dhampus pass at above 5,250 meters high,
  • Cross with views of Annapurna Himal, Nilgiri’s peaks, and then descend to Yak Kharka for overnight camp
  • Within back into green vegetation of Juniper, Burberry and rhododendron bushes.

Day 14: Trek to Marpha 2, 675 - 05 hours.
  • Today last of walk with long descend back into village, after being in complete wilderness for some days in high mountains
  • Walk through forest of firs, pines and rhododendron trees to reach charming village at Marpha.
  • Where all houses painted white, a gem of a village with an interesting monastery.
  • Marpha located lower Mustang district around Kaligandaki river valley,
  • Famous for delicious apples and product like cider, brandy local brew, juices, dry apples and apricot fruits.
  • Enjoy afternoon in the comfort of nice lodges and explore this beautiful village.

Day 15: Drive to Jomsom 2, 715 m and fly to Pokhara 860 m - 20 mins.
  • Morning short drive to Jomsom for short flight to reach Pokhara,
  • During air excellent views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna range on both sides of the plane window.
  • Land at Pokhara airport then short drive to the hotel for overnight stop by the famous Lake Phewa

Day 16: Drive / Fly back to Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.
  • Morning after breakfast drives to Kathmandu
  • Takes 5-6 hrs on same busy highway back to Kathmandu
  • On drive observe Nepalese country life within farm villages and town.
  • Reaching Kathmandu transfer to hotel with evening free at leisure

Day 17: International Departure homeward bound or respective countries.
