Altitude Sickness and Acclimatization

Annapurna base camp lies at the bottom of Annapurna I (8091m) tenth highest mountain in the world. The highest elevation of the Annapurna base camp trek is 4130m from sea level. Getting a higher altitude means a thinner oxygen level that can be hard to breathe in a higher elevation walk.

You have to get used to that in a higher altitude low level of air, walk slowly and steadily which helps your body hydrated. If you walk fast and are worried about the destination in less time that might be chances of dehydration and altitude sickness.

Altitude sickness also called Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) symptoms are headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, hard to breathe, fatigue, and so on happened over 2500m altitude. To overcome the problem of these symptoms you must have plenty of liquid (water, tea, soup and etc.), which will be keeping hydrated our body and lessen the chances of altitude sickness. For mild cases, you must have Diamox and get rest overnight, it will help you to overcome the symptoms of mountain sickness.

We have to cure symptoms of altitude sickness, and if the condition becomes worse should be transferred to a lower elevation as soon as possible. In such a way, if a patient could not get relief then we must transfer to city areas like Pokhara and Kathmandu for better treatment. Mountain sickness can be the cause of death sometimes if you neglected that. Our experience and professional guide will help you to make a situation better and don’t hesitate to ask them to find a solution. They are well-known about the Himalayan region weather and walking pace to minimize the difficulty during the trek.

Elevation Oxygen level
1000m/3,281ft 88%
2500m/8,202ft 73%
3000m/9,843ft 68%
3500m/11,483ft 64%
4000m/13,123ft 60%
4500m/14,764ft 57%

Internet Connectivity

Internet connections are easily available nowadays during the Annapurna base camp trek. Every tea house offers a Wi-Fi service and you can share your experience with your loved ones, relatives, and friends and posted some views on your social media.

We do have some options to use the internet by using a Sim card on your mobile phone like NCELL which is useful sometime Wi-Fi doesn’t work. However, sometimes higher altitudes it doesn’t work, so you have to use the tea house’s internet service.

Drinking Water

Water is highly essential for the altitude trek because it keeps our body hydrated and out of the problem of mountain sickness. Therefore, you must drink 4-5 liters of fluid per day.

Since 2015 Annapurna region banned plastic water bottles and where you can easily access safe drinking water at each tea house along the trek. You must have to bring a reusable bottle along with you can refill it with hot and cold water that will be an affordable cost to buy a bottle of water. You can bring a Steri pen option that can help you to clean drinking tap water or you can also use medicine for purification. Mountain water is clean and pure and we didn’t find any impurities but you have to purify it while using it.

Plus, we can use iodine and chlorine but it will alter the test of water. Instead, you can add flavor electrolyte powder that will help you to avoid bad chemical tests and is easily available in Kathmandu pharmacy.

Having electrolytes in the drinking water that helps you to get some minerals like potassium, sodium, magnesium, etc. you might lose while walking but you can get back with it.

During the trek, tea houses provide hot and purified water but you have to pay extra. It will differ as you are heading towards higher elevation and the cost will be rose as you walk higher altitude.

So we are highly requested to have the best insurance company before starting the trek from your own home country. This trek’s highest point is 4130m altitude and your insurance should cover up to this level.

Our main priority is your safety during the Himalayan region trek, we are not doing any kind of delay or imposed during emergencies that much altitude. When you arrived at a higher altitude there will be thinner oxygen and trekkers usually suffer from altitude sickness, if not treated well it will cause them of dying.

Trekking in higher elevations you might face physical injuries and that should cover your insurance. Before the trip, you have to confirm whether injuries and emergency meet their policy or not.
