Upper Dolpo Trekking Overview

Upper Dolpo trekking and adventure take you far into a remote and isolated country, where elusive Snow Leopard, Herds, Thar found along the treks within the wild country of Upper Dolpo areas. The area was made famous by movie Caravan later called Himalaya, a film joint venture of French and Nepalese a story of Dolpo people and its traditional life nominated for Oscar as the best foreign movie.

Upper Dolpo a fascinating country to visit, where the adventure leads you around best parts of Dolpo within Inner and Upper Dolpo visiting emerald Phoksumdo lake. Then heading higher crossing scenic Kang-la pass to reach our leading destination at Shey Gompa ‘The Crystal Monastery’ close to its beautiful Crystal Mountain.

After an unusual and most fascinating moment heading into lower and inner Dolpo with great wonderful times around Upper Dolpo within Shey Gompa,

Then walks leads towards delightful villages of Saldang and over the scenic pass to reach a marvelous country around Tokyo village, and then at Tarakot a town of the historical background of Malla within the medial period.

Best Seasons for Upper Dolpo Trekking

April to May springtime will be the best time when wild-flowers especially the rhododendron (Nepal national flower) in full bloom, which the walk more attractive with beautiful, bright morning till afternoon, with some chances of rains sometimes.

September, October to early November another best months around Autumn/Fall and beginning of wintertime, when most of the days are unobstructed views and walks but can be much colder and freezing as altitude gains with chances of snowfall sometimes.

Can join in for Upper Dolpo trekking in monsoon wet months from mid-June to mid-September, where Dolpo region falls within rain-shadow, heavy rain clouds blocked by a high Himalayan range of mountains. Day 01: Arrival day in Kathmandu via various airlines and transfer to hotel.
  • At Kathmandu airport received by Adventure Alpine Gorkha Treks staff / guide
  • Transfer to your hotel in the hub of Kathmandu around Thamel area
  • Meet at the hotel lobby for group regarding trek briefing

Day 02: In Kathmandu options for sightseeing tour and trek preparation.
  • In Kathmandu for leisure activities with guided sightseeing tour around places of Interest
  • Kathmandu steeped with historical and religious ancient monuments listed in World Heritage Sites
  • Rest of the day preparation for Upper Dolpo Trekking

Day 03: Fly to Nepalgunj 150m 55 minutes flight and transfer to hotel.
  • Morning or afternoon transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport for flight to Nepalgunj city
  • During 55 minutes flight views of Himalayan range with Dhaulagiri and Annapurna mountains
  • On reaching at Nepalgunj airport transfer to hotel around the city area with time for short walk and preparation for the trek next morning.

Day 04: Morning flight to Jhupal 2,475 m and trek to Dunai 2,140 m - 04 hrs.
  • Early morning transfer to Nepalgunj airport for short flight to land at Jhupal within Dolpo.
  • On reaching Jhupal walk begins past farm villages and forest areas to reach a large town at Dunai for overnight in local simple lodge.
  • Dunai the hub and headquarter town of whole Dolpo district with time to explore around interesting town and markets witness people of Far Western Nepal.

Day 05: Trek to Chepka 2,838 m - 06 hrs.
  • Morning cross a bridge over Thulo Bheri River and climb a ridge to Phuksumdo River valley with views of Kagmara peak
  • Walk downhill past farm villages with walnut trees close to a stream at Dhera,
  • With short climb to Rahagaon village of Thakuri a Hindu local tribe, then downhill walk into forested area to reach overnight camp at Chepka a small farm village.

Day 06: Trek to Samdua village 2,960m -06 hrs.
  • From Chepka short climb and descend into forest to river,
  • Climb after leaving the forest, then downhill to cross a small bridge at Ryajik village
  • Trek further to Samdua for overnight stop near entrance of Phuksumdo National Park.

Day 07: Trek to Phoksundo Lake 3,630 m - 06 hours.
  • Today walk leads to Phoksundo Lake after Pungmo Khola valley and downhill to upper side of Phoksundo Khola
  • Continue walk to Ringmo village, an interesting village of Tibetan origin with mud plastered chhorten and Mani (prayer) walls.
  • A short walk to Phoksumdo Lake for overnight camp nearby Phoksumdo Lake

Day 08: Rest day at Phoksundo Lake for local excursion.
  • A rest day, marvel beautiful views of landscapes and peaks of Kagmara, and visit interesting Ringmo village by the lake side.

Day 09: Trek to Phoksundo-Khola 3,750 m- 05 hrs.
  • From here on-route Upper Dolpo
  • Walk follows contouring rocky ledge high over a river bank in between unsteady path.
  • Head towards end of the lake and past summer pasture into a wide valley at Phoksundo Khola (stream) for the overnight stop

Day 10: Trek to Phoksundo Bhanjyang 4,717 m - 04 hrs.
  • Walk north past Phoksundo Khola up on hilly slopes,
  • Climb to a ridge top with views of green wide valley as far towards Kang-La pass on-route Shey Gompa, overnight camp pitched on a nice green summer pasture.

Day 11: Cross Kang -La 5,350 m and trek to Shey Gompa 4,160 m via -06 hrs.
  • Morning climb to reach Shey Gompa or Crystal Monastery, close to Crystal Mountain at mere distance.
  • From Phoksundo Bhanjyang climb on stone and rocky path to Kang-la pass at above 5,350 m high, our topmost heights of the adventure.
  • The top with great views of snow-peaks include as far to Mt. Dhaulagiri.
  • Descend to reach bottom of a hill to a river, to reach a Buddhist prayer monument with Chorten and Mani.
  • From here short walk to reach at Shey Gompa situated at the bottom of Crystal Mountain regarded as Holy Mountain with old monastery close-by.

Day 12: Rest day at Shey Gompa around Crystal Monastery.
  • Rest day in the harmony of nature visit Shey Monastery also called Crystal Monastery,
  • Shey Gompa well described and presented in the novel Snow Leopard by Peter Matthiessen.

Day 13: Trek to Namgung 4,608 m via Sela (Gela) La 5,094m.
  • Journey continue to a wall canyon to reach Sela or Gela-la at 5,094 m offers views of Mt. Dhaulagiri peaks,
  • Downhill walk to Namgung Gaon for overnight stop.

Day 14: Trek to Saldang 3,770 m - 05 hours.
  • Walk on dusty windswept terrain with steep climb to reach overnight camp at Saldang.
  • Another impressive and large village of the region situated higher side of the plateau.

Day 15: Trek to Chagaon 4,910 m - 05 hrs.
  • Morning walk follows Nang Chu River with short ups and down past Sugu-Gaon and Dechen Lapran a cattle herder settlement
  • Head to overnight camp at Chagoan village with old Rapa Gompa of pre Buddhist and ancient Bon-Pa culture.

Day 16: Trek to Dachu Khola camp at 4,700 m - 06 hrs.
  • Morning walk south to Tarap valley around Tokyu and Dho Tarap village,
  • Walk south to reach Dachu Khola and beyond, crossing river through farm fields, and then into Yak herder areas for overnight camp.

Day 17: Cross over Jyanta-La at 5,220 m and walk to Phedi 4,900 m - 06 hrs.
  • Walk follows river for short while, encountering yaks and mules laden caravan on route Tibet.
  • Trade with Tibet since hundreds of years and walk on the old Trans Himalayan Caravan Route.
  • From base of Jyanta-la Pass with steep climb to reach top of the pass with views of massive mountain range, descend to the base of the pass on route Tokyu village.

Day 18: Trek to Tokyu Gaon 4,209 m via Jeng la 5,090m-06 hrs.
  • After steep climb an easy walk to reach at Tokyu Gaon for overnight.
  • An impressive and interesting village of Dolpo area consists of more than ten villages and nice tended farm fields with old monasteries.

Day 19: Trek to Dho Tarap 3, 944 m- 05 hrs.
  • After Tokyu Gaon, downhill to Tarap Chu on broad green valley
  • One of scenic wide valleys with Sheppard’s settlements of Yaks and Sheep, and walk continues to our overnight camp at Dho Tarap.
  • Another interesting village with mix tribes of Tibetans origin and Magar hill tribe people.

Day 20: Trek to Ghyamgar 3,759 m - 07 hrs.
  • Descend to Tarap valley, largest and longest valley of Dolpo area of 20 k.m
  • Stretches Tarap Chu River joins Thuli Bheri River near Tarakot village,
  • Walk leads to Langa of beautiful cascading waterfalls head south to Sisaul a small place of Kesila to reach our overnight camp at Ghyamgar.

Day 21: Trek to Tarap Khola 3,652 via Chhyugar 3,440 m - 06 hours.
  • Morning walks on Tarap nice valley enter into narrow gorge with some vegetation of bushes of juniper and wild rose,
  • Walk leads to Toltol with large overhanging cave, walk reaches confluence of River Tarap Chu and Lang Khola, overnight camp by the river

Day 22: Trek to Tarakot 2,540 m - 06 hrs.
  • Start morning walk into a small wooded area, follow river all the way at Tarakot.
  • A large and interesting village with old history and well maintained terraced farm fields.
  • Tarakot with historical fortress (Dzong or Kot) guarding the village.
  • At Tarakot village visit famous old Sandul Gomba located at junction of Barbung Khola and Tarap Chu River for overnight camp.

Day 23: Trek to Dunai - 05 hrs then drive to Jhupal - 02 hr jeep ride.
  • After Tarakot, last day walk to Dunai then short drive to Jhupal for last overnight stop and flight back to Kathmandu.
  • Morning walk follows a wide trail with short uphill and downhill towards Thuli Bheri River valley to reach at Dunai,
  • Reaching Dunai jeeps drive to Jhupal to catch our next morning flight to Nepalgunj.

Day 24: Morning flight to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj and transfer to hotels.
  • From Jhupal a sweeping short flight to Nepalgunj to connect flight to Kathmandu with fantastic mountain panorama
  • Land at Kathmandu airport, and transfer to hotel around Thamel or near about.

Day 25: In Kathmandu free as contingency day and for individual activities.
  • An extra day in Kathmandu where flight can get delay and might lead to cancellation due to unfavorable bad weather,
  • Quite normal around Himalaya as weather can be un-predictable sometimes.
  • Spare day enjoy individual activities or just relax and enjoy the memories of Uppper Dolpo Trekking.

Day 26: International Departure homeward bound or respective countries.

Depart from the hotel as per your flight time Adventure Alpine Gorkha Treks guides and staff and transfer you for International departure homeward bound or to respective countries.
